Clove is a tropical tree scientifically known as Syringium aromaticum.
This is a spicy species. The flowers of clove plant are dried and prepared into cloves and are mainly used as a spice in food preparation as well as medicine. Clove oil is also used in the production of perfumes and toothpastes.
Cloves are mainly grown in the midland humid region of Sri Lanka. The total area of Karabu is 7618 hectares. Kandy, Kegalla and Matale districts are the major growing areas.
72-90% of the essential oil extracted from cloves consists of eugenol, and this compound is the main cause of cloves’ fragrance. Other important constituents of cloves include acetyl eugenol, beta-caryophyllene and vanillin, cretegolic acid, gallotannic acid, methyl salicylate, eugenin, kaempferol, rammentin, eugenitin, oleonic acid, sigmasterol, and campesterol.
