Brindle berry scientifically called Garcinia Cambogia and also referred to as Malabar tamarind or Goraka is a tropical fruut native to south and south east Asia.The fruit with thick and deep vertical lobes similar to a small pumpkin is green in colour when raw and acquires a yellowish tinge and turns orange when it fully ripens. The fruit is used in Ayurveda practice for its medicinal properties and in Asian cuisinefor its distinctive tartness. Its grows abundantly in the lowland wet region of Sri Lanka.  A mature tree is about 50-60 feet tall.  The specialty of this plant is that both male and female flowers occur on the same plant. It is a medium evergreen, shade-loving, relatively slow-growing tree found naturally in the local tropical rainforests of Sri Lanka.  Juniper trees are small to medium in size, with horizontal or downward bending branches.  Sri Lankans use goraka to flavour curries and for medicine.  Goraka has become a popular spice in the world today as a dietary supplement for weight loss and appetite control.  Goraka is not cultivated as a fruit tree, but as an economic crop in gardens in humid and temperate zone.

There are four species of goraka belonging to the family Guttiferae.  They are known as Mala goraka, Red goraka, Country goraka, Ela goraka. Red goraka and Ela goraka are used to flavor food.  Red goraka is red when ripe and the pulp inside is also red.  Ripe gora fruit is yellow in color and pulp is yellowish white in color.  A little of both these goraka are also eaten as a fruit.
