Cinnamon is the dried bark of the perennial plant Cinnamomum zeylanicum of the genus Lauraceae. True cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka. Cinnamon was originally cultivated in the forests of the central hills of Sri Lanka. The history of cinnamon dates back to BC. Around 2800, it is mentioned as “Kwai” in Chinese documents.
The best cinnamon in the world is produced in Sri Lanka. From that, Sri Lanka has occupied a very high position economically. Sri Lanka is still the world’s most precious supplier of cinnamon in the cinnamon cultivation that has been going on since the Portuguese, Dutch and English era.
Cinnamon in Sri Lanka originates from the Central Highlands and seven wild cinnamon stands can be found in Kandy, Matale, Belihul Oya, Haputale, Horton Plains and Sinharaja site. Currently, cinnamon is cultivated along the coast from Negombo to Matara and it has also spread to Kalutara and Ratnapura.
